After the show, I talked my dad into buying us one of Carlton’s new Fight’n Cow calls.Ī couple of months later, on the opening day of Idaho’s archery elk season, after an uneventful morning, my dad and I were sitting high on a ridge, eating a sandwich and wondering what to do next. Carlton put on one of the most entertaining seminars I have ever heard. I vividly remember attending a calling seminar by elk hunting legend Wayne Carlton when I was around 14 years old. That is why there are restrictions in those areas to protect the elk and visitors as explained under elk rut closures here. In RMNP, the elk hang out in the meadows - Moraine Park, Horseshoe Park, and Upper Beaver Meadows. Look at the reviews here on TripAdvisor and you will understand why. If you really don't mind the price, the cabins at Mountain Village at Lake Estes (managed by Estes Park Resort) are luxury cabins. If you find a vacation rental on the golf course, you will probably see and hear the elk, and many homes on the golf courses have great views. The elk also hang out on both the 18 hole and 9 hole golf courses in Estes Park. Try to book one of the the larger duplex cabins (#32 - #39) and you will not only see the elk, but you will hear them even during the night because the meadow is directly below these units. Since I used to own a condo there, I can tell you that some of the condos at Marys Lake (managed by SkyRun) have great views and the meadow near Marys Lake is frequented by a large bull elk with his harem. Begin your search at this link, but also check VRBO, Airbnb, and property management companies like SkyRun and Rocky Mountain Resorts. There are numerous lodging options and hundreds of vacation rentals in Estes Park. During elk rut, the elk just about take over the town of Estes Park at times. All other main roads in RMNP will be open unless there is an unusually heavy early snowfall which is not likely.Įstes Park is the best place to stay because there is more of RMNP to experience on the east side than the west side. Dirt Old Fall River is usually open through the first weekend in October weather permitting. Since the elk move to lower elevations that time of year, whether or not Trail Ridge Road is fully open will not impact you seeing and hearing the elk rut. These temporary closures can be overnight to mid-day, part of a day, or several days. Temporary closures of Trail Ridge Road (highway 34 through RMNP between Estes Park and Grand Lake) at higher elevations because of snow and ice usually begin happening in late September and into October until rangers declare the road officially closed for the season around October 15-20. Average peak fall color dates for RMNP have been around September 21 through early October, however, the last couple of years, the color change has been late by a week or more. The peak of elk rut in RMNP and in Estes Park is mid-September to mid-October.
